Wisdom teeth appear in the mouth at about 18 years of age. They are called Wisdom Teeth because they erupt at a time when the person has started to come of age, and is wiser. (We all know people who are non-the-wiser for their wisdom teeth, but the name has stuck!)
The most common cause of tooth decay in children is from well-meaning caregivers giving sweetened drinks in feeding bottles. Another common cause is having the milk bottle in the mouth whilst baby is asleep - the pool of milk left in the mouth has enough sugar to cause decay.
Dental implants have come to the fore as the replacement of choice, as they do not require damaging of adjacent teeth, bear the chewing forces on their own, and are most natural-looking as they help prevent shrinkage of the jawbone. In some cases, implants are cheaper than bridges.
Root canal treatment is the removal of dead tissue, and cleaning the empty chambers and tunnels from germs. These tunnels are then filled with an inert filling material, and the tooth is crowned to prevent further damage. The tooth is then given a new lease of life.
It is important to maintain good oral and dental health when you are pregnant. The most common hormonally-affected change that occurs is an increased reaction of the gums to the plaque and tartar on the teeth, known as 'pregnancy gingivitis'.
